Scrap
Scrap metal is the combination of waste metal, metallic material and any product that contains metal that is capable of being recycled from previous consumption or product manufacturing. Whether it’s vehicle parts, building supplies or surplus project materials.
Scrap metal is cateogrized in two types :
non-ferrous metal scrap
ferroous metal scrap
Non-ferrous Metal Scrap
Non-ferrous metals are metals that do not contain significant amounts of iron and are not magnetic. These metals are often valued for their unique properties and applications. Non-ferrous metal scrap is commonly recycled to recover valuable materials and conserve natural resources.
The most valuable scrap metals for recycling are non-ferrous; the most common of which are those that do not contain iron and are more resistant to corrosion, including copper, brass, aluminium, zinc, magnesium, tin, lead and nickel.
The following items are also made of non-ferrous metals:
- Aluminum Items: Beverage Cans, Aircraft components, Bicycle frames, Cookwares, Electronics casings
- Copper Items: Electrical wiring and cables, Radiators, Roofing materials
- Lead items: Lead-acid batteries, Radiation shieldinhg materials, Roof flashing, Cable sheathing, Fishing weights
Ferrous Metal Scrap
Ferrous metal scrap refers to scrap materials that contain iron and are magnetic in nature. These materials are primarily composed of iron and can also contain varying amounts of other elements such as carbon and manganese. Ferrous metal scrap is commonly recycled to produce new steel and iron products, reducing the need for virgin raw materials and conserving energy.
Ferrous metals are less valuable to metal recyclers but they will still recoup some value if you have enough of it. This includes metals such as steel and iron. Steel can be found in so many places; from cars to chairs, cabinets, shelving and more.
The following items are also made of ferrous metals:
- Construction and building materials such as I beams, ductwork, rebar, and electrical wiring
- Transportation parts and products such as cars, railroad scrap, rotors, drums, and motor blocks
- Containers and packaging
